Embarking on a DIY RV renovation can be an exciting (but daunting) and rewarding project—but to make it a success, you need the right equipment, tools and materials! As a full-time RVer and RV Renovator (on a client basis), I live and breathe RV life and all that comes with it. Whether you're updating the interior, installing new fixtures, painting or tackling a full renovation, having the right gear is crucial. But where do you start? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential tools every DIY RV Renovator will need in their toolbox. Let’s get you set up for success as you embark on your RV renovation journey!
Essential Power Tools for Your DIY RV Renovation
Circular Saw: Ideal for cutting wood, plywood, and other materials for flooring, cabinetry, and more. Dewalt is my go-to brand for power tools but there are many similar options.
Drill/Driver: A versatile tool for drilling holes and driving screws into walls, floors, and other surfaces.
Jigsaw: Perfect for intricate cuts and shaping materials to fit your design.
Angle Grinder: Used for cutting through metal or sanding tough materials. This especially comes in handy when there are staples or nails that you just can’t get out during the demo part of a renovation.
Orbital Sander: A must-have for smoothing rough surfaces or preparing surfaces for painting. Whether you’re building your own furniture or painting over old furniture, a good sanding can go a long way for a smooth, professional look.
Note: My power tool recommendations are always going to be cordless if it’s available. It makes life so much easier - TRUST ME! And batteries have come a long way in the last 10 years. But I still recommend having at least two 20V batteries with a two battery charger and two 12V with a charger. And if you want to go a step further (it truly makes life so much easier if you share tools or need a quick charge), get a quick charger for your 20V batteries.

Priming/Painting Tools and Accessories
Flooring Tools and Accessories
Hand Tools You’ll Use Over and Over
Utility Knife: Ideal for cutting vinyl, foam, and even fabric.
Hammer and Mallet: For general carpentry and tapping materials into place.
Screwdrivers (Various Sizes): Essential for installing screws in small, delicate spaces.
Pry Bar: Helpful for removing old materials like flooring or trim.
Safety Gear for Your DIY RV Renovation
Safety Glasses: Protect your eyes when using power tools.
Hearing Protection: Use earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing from loud power tools.
Work Gloves: Keep your hands safe from cuts, splinters, and sharp materials.
Dust Masks: Prevent inhaling debris when cutting or sanding materials.
Knee Pads: Comfortable and practical for long hours spent on your knees while working inside the RV.
Organizational Tools for a Smooth Renovation Process
Toolbox or Tool Chest: Keep your tools organized and easily accessible. It can be so annoying to constantly get up and go get what you need when you can simply have your tools with you at all times.
Multi-Compartment Organizer: Sort and store screws, nails, and small parts to avoid losing them.
Magnetic Tool Holder: A convenient way to keep your frequently-used tools within arm’s reach. Another great magnetic option is a Magnetic Wristband.
Cordless Tool Organizer: A great way to store your cordless drill and other rechargeable tools.
Specialized Tools for Unique RV Renovation Tasks
Staple Gun: A must for securing fabric to upholstery or installing insulation.
Caulking Gun: For sealing joints around windows, doors, and seams to prevent leaks.
Rivet Gun: Perfect for securing metal panels or other materials in place.
Wet Tile Cutter: If you plan to install a custom backsplash or flooring.
Heat Gun: Useful for shrinking tubing or softening materials for reshaping.
Renovating your RV can be a fulfilling experience, especially when you’re equipped with the right tools. Investing in the essential power tools, hand tools, safety gear, and organizational items listed above, will help make a challenging task less of a headache. With these tools, you’ll be well on your way to creating your dream mobile space. I can’t stress this enough–take your time, plan your project carefully, and use quality tools to make the renovation process smooth and efficient. Now, gather your tools and get to work!
